"One of my favorite vocalists is the great Billie Holiday. Billie Holiday was born Eleanor Fagan in 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Billie was a joy to hear! Her voice seemed to touch the listener where they lived in their hearts. She never sang a song the same way twice; it was always sung according to the way she felt. When Billie Holiday sang a song, she made it hers; she truly owned whatever she sang.
The decision to paint her led to one of my most gratifying pieces. This is the only painting in the Centennial Celebration series where my Father, Mother, Aunt and Uncle appear. They are seated at a table in the upper left hand corner. It's a real treat for me to see them there. You can almost feel the intensity of "Lady Day's" voice in this picture. Her various moods are reflected in such a way that you are able to chronicle her evolution. Billie Holiday has a profound effect on the singers of today. That is why I love Billie Holiday, her music transcends time!"
